Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is widely regarded as one of the most influential men in design. Born in Germany in the late 19th century, van der Rohe was surrounded by creativity from a young age. His father was a stonemason, which provided van der Rohe a childhood infused with an appreciation for structure and material. This appreciation would carry over into his design career, both as an architect and as one of the most innovative furniture designers of the 20th century. After apprenticing with designer Bruno Paul and later Peter Behrens in Berlin, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe established an office of his very own in Berlin. In his architectural designs, van der Rohe used materials like stone and metal to create spaces that flowed freely into one another, challenging the architectural standards of the time and catapulting Germany into its modern movement. These same ideas-- space and flow-- and materials-- metal, stone-- followed van der Rohe into his furniture design career. His most well-known pieces, the Barcelona chairs, and ottomans were designed for the king and queen of Spain. To find out more, please do not hesitate to contact us.
