It seems that Mariano Fortuny was destined to be a legend in the design world. From his birth in 1871 to a family of well-known artists in Spain, he was all but expected to follow in his family’s footsteps. After his father’s death, Fortuny’s mother moved her family around Europe, exposing young Mariano Fortuny to a variety of cultures, ways of thinking, and design philosophies. This sparked Fortuny’s curiosity, which would remain the driving force behind his creativity for the rest of his career. In 1907, Fortuny began dabbling in textiles, designing womens’ dresses that utilized both classical and modern elements. This same balance of old and new can be traced throughout his other projects, including his furniture designs. Fortuny furniture offers both extremely elegant items-- tufted chairs and sofas with fascinating silhouettes in stunning fabrics, for instance-- and much more grounded, rusting ones as well--for example, dining tables modeled after a butcher’s table. The curved lines of Fortuny’s tables are sleek and attractive, and his bookcases and side tables strike a balance between functional and beautiful.
