Self-taught British designer Tom Dixon, who helms his eponymous brand of home décor, was born in 1959 in Tunisia. Although he enrolled in art school in London, he quickly dropped out to pursue his own artistic and design endeavors. He learned to weld in the early 1980s, which led him to rapidly and prolifically produce chairs out of salvaged material and found objects; the avant-garde and unusual aesthetic of these welded, assemblage chairs quickly garnered the attention of the design world at large, and Dixon opened his first studio. In 1986, he produced the S-Chair, which was inspired by a doodle of a chicken. The S-Chair has become iconic in its own right, and has been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among many other museum collections. Two years later, Dixon created his first light fixture, the Spiral Light, which initiated his now famous collections of lighting. Today, the Tom Dixon brand is regarded as a leading resource for innovative and often unconventional home lighting, furniture and accessories.
