Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin may be best known as a clothing designer, but his furniture features some of the most playful and original works in the realm of home décor. From coffee tables to chairs to luminaires, Pierre Cardin’s designs are often inspired by his own space-age fashion, as well as landscapes and nature. One might see a sunset over the ocean in one piece, or a mountain or an animal. Using shining lacquered wood, glass or metal, Cardin creates scorpion-like dressers, chests in the likeness of pyramids and bars that look like the smooth shells of beetles. As in his fashion, he frequently incorporates geometric elements of circles, squares and triangles. His furniture seems to favor style over functionality, but closer examination proves utility need not be sacrificed in the name of beauty. Each piece draws the eye with vibrant blues, greens, reds and yellows. Pierre Cardin furniture evokes modern art sculpture, as seen in his Rare Burl Wood “Fan” Coffee Table and his Cantilevered Trompe L’Oeil Marble Coffee Table and Cocktail Table. Cardin has been creating furniture since the 1970s, and his modern and unmistakable designs have maintained their popularity over the decades. Each piece is a surprise, with sharp angles and swooping curves, as can be seen in his Mid-Century Modern Chrome Z Chairs. In his childhood, Pierre Cardin had a pastime of assembling furniture from wood scraps and glue; his practice has long since evolved into a luxurious design habit for furniture that draws attention. Pierre Cardin furniture is designed to give any room a unique element.
