Karl Springer

Karl Springer has come to be recognized as one of the most acclaimed and influential American furniture designers of the latter 20th century. His penchant for juxtaposing glamorous and sophisticated design with crude elements resulted in a body of work that is raw, powerful, and inimitable. Born in Berlin, Germany in 1931, Karl immigrated to New York in 1957 where he initially worked as a window dresser for the Lord & Taylor flagship store on 5th Avenue. He eventually began working on a line of small fine leather goods, which were ultimately offered exclusively by Bergdorf Goodman. He soon opened his own atelier, and quickly began creating larger, more significant pieces. Karl’s passion for the finest materials and exquisite craftsmanship came to define his brand, which grew to offer full lines of home furniture that has been sought after worldwide. Though he passed in 1991, he was honored with a solo exhibition at the New York School of Interior Design in 1994, and his legacy of exceptional quality and unique aesthetic appeal has kept his work high in demand and popular today.
