Adrian Pearsall

Adrian Pearsall is hailed as one of the first influencers of the mid-century modern design movement in the United States. He was born in 1925 in Trumansburg, NY, and served in the Navy before obtaining his architectural engineering degree from the University of Illinois. Moving from architecture to design, Pearsall founded Craft Associates after college and became one of the most sought-after designers of the 1950s. His accomplishments were lauded in 2008 when he was welcomed into the American Furniture Hall of Fame. Among Pearsall’s most famous creations is the Gondola Sofa, admired for its sculptural walnut base and tufted upholstery detail. High-backed swivel chairs, especially those done for Craft Associates' Simply Spanish collection, are also considered iconic. Pearsall’s tables feature the same modern lines as his sofas and chairs. His Wedge side table has a simple, space-saving design featuring sculpted criss-cross legs and a lushly dark wood finish. In terms of color, most mid-century furniture was upholstered in solid hues; Adrian Pearsall furnishings run the gamut from universally flattering, neutral oatmeal and beige to vibrant emerald and fiery orange. These vintage pieces are a stylish addition to any room with a mid-century modern design, but they can also fit well into minimalist or contemporary spaces.
