The Lacquer Company

The Lacquer Company was created in 2008 by James Lowther. He bought his first piece of lacquer in Burma in 1999 – an antique burnt-orange betel box – still one of his favorite things. Before starting the company, he worked as an event planner and interior decorator for over ten years. He would often travel to Asia in search of lacquer for colorful design accents, and began to learn about the lacquer process with all the detail, patience, and attention that was needed to make it. James made it his goal to bring this ancient art form from the East to the West. He collaborated with designer Rita Konig, whose work includes the Hudson Nightstand and Belles Rives Tray; Steven Gambrel, who designed the Gambrel Coffee Table and Gambrel Desk, among others; and Veere Grenney, who designed the Deston Tray, plus many more items. Other designers who have created for The Lacquer Company include Jeffrey Bilhuber, Flair New York, Luke Edward Hall, Pentreath & Hall, John Derian, Christopher Spitzmiller, and Martin Brudnizki. The company provides elegant, eclectic, and artful custom lacquer furniture and custom lacquer tabletops, including mirrors and lacquer lamps, that are just as much at home in a small apartment as in a country or beach house. The Lacquer Company manufactures its furniture and furnishings in Saigon, and now James divides his time between Saigon, New York, and London. The Lacquer Company pieces are the must-have touch and accent for fine homes, offices, and businesses throughout the world.
