T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings

If you are a fan of American mid-century modern furniture, then you have British-born designer T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings to thank. Eventually becoming one of the great tastemakers of American interior design in the mid 20th century, T.H. Robsjohn got his start in London, where he received a classical design education from the University of London. In his early designs, Robsjohn-Gibbings exhibited an inclination to the classicist design he had learned in school. This tendency can be seen in his early work doing interior design for cruise ships and as art director for prominent London studios. He worked for iconic antiques dealer Charles Duveen in London for a few years beginning in 1926 before transferring to Duveen’s New York Office in 1929. It was here that T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings began to create the modern sofa designs, dining room chairs, credenzas, and other home furnishings that remain famous to this day. His designs were still inspired by is classical design education, but he expressed these ideas in new ways by favoring minimal forms with elegant lines and sleek profiles. T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings began to receive a great deal of attention for his work, and over the course of his career he produced interior designs and custom furnishings for well-known figures such as Elizabeth Arden, Alfred Knopf, and Doris Duke.
