Minton-Spidell remains the gold standard of custom 18th century-inspired furniture in the United States. Today, Minton-Spidell pieces are available at top showrooms across the country. Robert J. Minton and Neil Spidell founded their furniture reproduction business in 1966 to meet the needs of customers coming into their Los Angeles antique shop. As the story goes, a woman came in to purchase two antique chairs but wished she had a full set of eight. In just a few weeks, with the help of local carpenters and finishers, Minton had acquired six perfect replicas for his customer and unwittingly secured his legacy as a first-rate producer of “in style” pieces. Over the following five decades, Minton-Spidell designed hundreds of custom reproductions inspired by the 18th and 19th-century European pieces in their antique shop, and also designed original modern transitional pieces. Minton-Spidell is perhaps best known for its hand-applied finishes ranging from hand-rubbed French polish-style wood stains to artfully aged paints and 23k burnished gold. More solid paint finishes and stained walnut styles are new additions and can be customized to customer specifications. The Minton-Spidell collection includes upholstered chairs and sofas, accent benches and ottomans, coffee tables, consoles and crystal lighting fixtures among other high-quality furnishings.
