Louis Vuitton, the namesake company founded by Louis Vuitton in 1854, was first located on Rue Neuve des Capucines in Paris, France. The French luxury design house crafts most of its merchandise with the LV logo monogram. The products evolved from luxury trunks first created in 1858 to leather goods, including luggage starting around 1913; in 1945 the company produced ready-to-wear, accessories, books, and more. In 1892, Georges Vuitton, after the death of his father, decided to build a worldwide empire for Louis Vuitton and opened stores in New York, Washington, D.C., London, Alexandria, Bombay, and Buenos Aires. In 1913, the Louis Vuitton Building debuted on the Champs-Élysées in France. Among the world’s leading international fashion houses, Louis Vuitton sells its products through its many standalone boutiques and leases in high-end department stores. The company operates in 50 countries with more than 460 stores throughout the world. In 1987, LVMH was introduced as a merger with Moet et Chandon and Hennessy, elevating the brand to new heights. Starting in 2001, the brand began collaborating with artists including Stephen Sprouse and Marc Jacobs (then creative director); Takashi Murakami in 2006 with his whimsical post modern designs; and Jeff Koons in 2017 for two collections in an effort to "further [explore] the intersection of fashion and art”. In 2013, Nicolas Ghesquière gathered the reins of the company, ushering in a new era for Louis Vuitton. In March 2018, Virgil Abloh, an African American, was brought on and named artistic director of menswear, one of few black designers leading a major European fashion house. He debuted his collection for Louis Vuitton at the 2018 Paris Men's Fashion Week and staged it in the historical Palais-Royal gardens' courtyard. From 2006 onwards, Louis Vuitton was named the world's most valuable multi-billion dollar luxury brand. Today, as the epitome of elegance and status, Louis Vuitton continues to be a powerful and influential design brand and company, and it continues to elevate and pioneer its exclusive products across the globe.
