J.T. Kalmar has been producing specialty, high-quality lighting products for nearly 140 years. In 2018, the company won the “Excellent Product Design” category at the German Design Awards for its Billy TL Ilse Crawford Edition Table Lamp. The firm's deep roots reach into the present day: Austrian culture and popular 20th-century aesthetic movements have helped to mold and shape its present collection, which incorporates classic elements of days gone by. Founded in Vienna in 1881 by Austrian designer-entrepreneur Julius Theodor Kalmar, the company first specialized in manufacturing chandeliers and other cast bronze items. Kalmar’s son August joined the firm in 1906 and would take over in 1913. August was a strong supporter of the Arts & Crafts movement and guided the company with its principles in mind. His designs integrated form with function and looked to the future with a forward-thinking and innovative approach. In the 1930s he collaborated with the Austrian Werkbund movement, which stressed modern design and encouraged cooperation between art, crafts and industry. Many of J.T. Kalmar’s 21st-century products harken back to designs from these eras. For example, the six-arm Admont 6 Pendant Light is based on a 1930 Wiener Werkbund design, and the Zweig Wall Light is a double sconce reminiscent of an early 1950s product. J.T. Kalmar’s collection includes floor lighting, standing lamps, table lamps, pendant lighting and wall fixtures, and options for finishes include polished nickel, polished brass, matte black and black bronze.
