Art Deco

Emerging in the peace and prosperity following World War I in the roaring 1920’s and 30’s, Art Deco is a distinct and visually striking design style that can be traced back to a large decorative arts exhibition in Paris. The exhibition, held in 1925, popularized Art Deco and vaulted it to national and international prominence. Art Deco is a celebration of modern life that unites luxury and sophistication. It takes advantage of materials that had not previously been incorporated into art or furniture such as chrome, Bakelite plastic, and plate glass while also incorporating historically luxurious materials like mahogany, ivory, and dark lacquered wood. The designers of the Art Deco era freely explored new forms and designs in their furniture. Geometric shapes became incredibly popular, and their presence is sometimes considered a hallmark of Art Deco design. Contrast between light and dark materials also features heavily in Art Deco designs, making them unique and interesting pieces.
