Designer Nathan Turner tells us all about the hunt, his design purchases and what makes them special, and then the customization of a piece. These home objects were curated from his Malibu residence and sourced from the South of France, Belgium, Southeast Asia and – of course – the all-American Maine.

You can capture Nathan’s beachy, Americana design sense through his personally consigned pieces on Sotheby’s HomeGet started by shopping his nautical home, below:

“I found this in a brocante in the South of France. It worked perfectly in my gallery wall in Malibu, mixed with other travel mementos.”

20th Century Traditional Style Carved Anchor

“I have always loved vintage textiles. We had this mid-century low-profile bed made and upholstered in mixed-matched vintage textiles from Southeast Asia. Have fun with fabrics — if you stay in the same color palette, you can mix patterns.”

“I loved the library in elementary school, and when I saw this vintage library cart at an antique mall, it took me right back, and I had to have it. It made a great catchall for books and things next to my bed. Savo adds: “I am obsessed with this vintage book cart. It’s so versatile and fun. This piece will bring so much character to any room while providing ample storage, your friends won’t stop staring!”

“This giant vintage chain was welded together to make this nautical entrance table. Mixing materials in a room is always a good idea, and the heavy iron brought in a needed layer to anchor the room.”

Sotheby’s Home vintage expert and Consignment Liaison Lucy Savo is also a fan: “Every room needs depth and interest, and what better way to provide that than with this amazing industrial table. I’ve never seen anything like it — it is so hip and cool, it can’t help but make your room the same!”

Late-20th Century Postmodern Chain Center Table

“I’m a ‘stoolaholic’ — they’re so multifunctional…a side table, an ottoman, extra pull-up seating. I love the vintage indigo paired with the bamboo…it’s beach but chic.”

Savo adds, “This bamboo stool is amazing. Bamboo, rattan and wicker have all made a big resurgence in interior design. This gem will make a perfect side table or footstool next to your favorite chair, while showing off your style.”

“I found this vintage seahorse at a fair in France — it made me smile. I painted it my favorite Hague Blue and took it home to Malibu.”

“I made these stools when I had my shop. Based on an antique pair I found in Istanbul…they’re great extra seating, and look beachy with the vintage blue and white linen.”
