Sandra Morgan launched her full-service residential interior design firm, Sandra Morgan Interiors, in 1988 in Greenwich, CT with her design partner, and daughter, Laird Morgan Tolan. Each member of the mother-daughter team brings her own unique passions and perspective to the firm: Sandra’s for art and antiques, and Laird’s for high fashion and styling. Rooms with their point of view are classically elegant, fresh and alive, accented by works of fine art. The result is spaces that are both beautiful and livable.

How did you discover your passion for design?
My design light truly turned on when I had a summer job during college. I was lucky enough to work in the trimming department of Scalamandre, taping tassels and braids to sample cards for decorators like the legendary Rose Cumming. I was captivated by the workmanship and history that went into the intricate designs destined for luxurious homes and even the White House.
What is your favorite decorative object at home?
I have a passion for blue and white porcelain. A pair of grand, oversized Chinese porcelain vases came into my life a few years ago. They stand over three feet tall and flank our fireplace. They are graceful and luminous, but don’t overwhelm the room, despite their size.
Is design an art or a science?
Design is definitely a blend of art and science; creating something aesthetically beautiful requires skill as well as a good eye for color, scale, and texture. Think of the hand-knotted Aubusson rugs and the vegetable dyes that have been used to create elegant color palettes and textures. Think of the iPhone, motorized shades, mirrored walls that turn into TV screens.
Do you have any go-to color or pattern combinations?
My go-to colors are blue and white. Always fresh and easy to live with. My day isn’t complete without a dose of indigo.
When do you consider a completed project a success?
Projects are always evolving. But a successful completion occurs when our clients say their home is their favorite destination.

What is the most common design mistake you see?
The most common design mistake is playing it too safe. Be adventurous and take a risk.
How do you balance style, comfort, and functionality?
Balancing style, comfort, and functionality is the essence of what a designer is meant to do. The use of the room determines which of the three takes precedence. The combination is always important, but it is a matter of degree.
Is there a specific item you typically use as a starting point? (ex: rug, artwork, statement piece, furniture)
Whenever possible, I love to start a project with a painting. It sets the mood and a color palette, and provides a space with instant “soul.”
