Founder of Davies Design Group, Kam Davies’ style and design are influenced by her East Coast roots, extensive global travel, and her current home in the Colorado mountains. She prides herself in creating timeless homes that express the story and personality of the people who reside within.

What inspired this career path for you?
I have always had a love of houses, creating comfortable and uncomplicated spaces and designing rooms and environments. As a child, I followed my mother around countless antique fairs and flea markets in our home state of Connecticut, and traipsed behind her through markets in Europe and faïenceries and brocantes in France. Travel and exploration have always been a constant in my life. Collecting beautiful pottery, textiles, and treasures is as important as the journey to find them, and has fostered my love of homes that tell a story and have a personality.

Davies Design Group creates authentic, timeless homes that express the story and personality of the people who reside within.

What is your go-to source for inspiration?
My style and design are influenced by my East Coast roots, extensive global travel, and my current home in the Colorado mountains.

Museums and artist workshops are another prominent source of inspiration, and I make a point to visit a variety of exhibits each year. I recently saw the Degas exhibit in Denver, and last fall I loved the Cézanne portraits exhibited at the D’Orsay in Paris. The colors, movement, and texture of these masters stops me in my tracks.

Tell us about your creative process.
I take a lot of pictures. Flowers, architecture, textiles, people, parties, food, color combinations, artwork, beautiful doors and walls–everything. I live a very visual life, and photography can help to capture a feeling, a moment, an emotion that we then weave into the design. I am constantly pinning (more literally, less electronically) images, swatches, concepts on boards, and always have a notebook in my bag to jot down streams of thought.

Describe your style in 6 words or less.
Cozy, collected, timeless, comfortable, bespoke, fearless.

What’s a staple in your tool kit?
A notebook. I’m a paper person. I love a fresh Moleskin to store my thoughts, lists, and ideas.

Who do you look up to in the design world?
Both Jeffrey Alan Marks and Kathryn Ireland have been not only incredible sources of inspiration, but generous mentors and fun, fabulous friends. I also am constantly inspired by both Rose Tarlow and Rose Uniacke for their unparalled eye, impeccable craftsmanship, and ability to embrace the past and shape the future.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?
I would love to restore a fabulous crumbling stone farmhouse outside Saint Rémy in Provence.

A “Napa meets New England” country home in Aspen for a design-loving, collaborative, and engaging family would also be a fantastic project.

Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
I believe that good design is the intersection of personality and love and detail and diligence. So, for me, these two quotes below show the importance of bringing each of these elements to a project

“We shape our homes and then our homes shape us.” Winston Churchill

Measure twice, cut once.
