The colorist of the stars, Sharon Dorram knows how to give you the perfect, effortless color you had as a child. Here she shares her tips and design picks.
What are two colors that always belong together?
The two colors I always couple are deep tangerine orange and a mushroom taupe or putty.
How has your design style evolved?Â
I’ve grown more “warm modern†yet still classic.
Favorite piece of furniture in your home?
The favorite pieces in my home are two large Cecily Brown monotypes.
What is the peanut butter and jelly of design?Â
A great light fixture and an amazing textured rug.
How does your work with color impact the way you view color in your home?
I love contrast in hair color and contrast in color in my home.
When you decide to buy furniture, what are your tips or lessons you’ve learned?
Take measurements or try it out before you purchase. I once saw these incredible Hervé van der Straeten lamps in a magazine and ordered them. When they arrived, they were much larger than I’d envisioned. Scale is really important in design, even when something is really beautiful, it needs to work in your space.
Listen and trust your heart. A mantra I tease about is, “Never trust someone who doesn’t eat bread!â€
One beauty product you swear by?
Virtue’s Perfect Ending Split End Serum—it’s my everyday styling product. It’s a nourishing hair serum that repairs and seals broken ends and protects from future fraying. It’s a must for anyone who colors her hair.
What is the best thing about your job? Worst thing?
Best thing about my job truly are my clients. I’ve met extraordinary people and love to network. So many connections have been made in my chairs—friendships, business partnerships, even match-making.
Worst thing about my job is when a client doesn’t show and forgets to cancel.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened with a client?
I don’t really have an embarrassing moment, but an awkward moment is when I once had to hide one client from another because they had a falling out.
What are you working on now? Anything new?
I am collaborating with Virtue Labs, the new breakthrough biotech haircare company as their color director to develop new products. We’re seeing some exciting things, so stay tuned!
