MA Allen has become one of today’s most sought-after designers and her one-of-a-kind interiors have captivated the design community. MA’s ability to combine bold colors, patterns, and textures with a contemporary feel has established her signature style.

What inspired this career path for you?
Growing up, I was exposed to the industry with parents in the furniture and design world–I was always decorating with my mom, decorating my room as a child, dorm room as I was older, my apartment, and first home. Growing up in the South has also given me a certain appreciation for antiques, heirlooms, etc. which has been a driving force behind my design style.

It was on a trip to Budapest when I was a junior in college (as I was on the path to becoming a lawyer at the time), when I realized that law school would not be my career path. I spent so much of my time on that trip going from antique store to antique store, and loving every minute of it. Once I made the decision to go back to school and pursue a career in interior design, I never looked back.

What is your go-to source for inspiration?
Travel, travel, travel.

Tell us about your creative process.
I always start by looking for inspiration in my clients lives–how they live, what they like, pieces they own – it’s always the start of the creative process.

Describe your style in 6 words or less.
Layered, classic, color central, fashion forward, vibrant, unconventional, modern maximalism

What’s a staple in your tool kit?
Vintage items and antiques are a must in all projects. Viyet has been great resource for finding unique items at a reasonable price point.

Collections–Buy things you love, one of a kind, find inspiration in places you love to travel, find what they do best and bring them back with you, live with your collections, don’t be afraid to layer, something old and something new.

Who do you look up to in the design world?
Hard to narrow down, but I admire the work of Katie Ridder and Steven Gambrel, and their attention to detail.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?
Flagship store for fashion designer. I love merging the worlds of fashion and interiors.

Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
“Buy the best and you’ll only cry once” – Miles Redd

Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?
House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Traditional Home–I still love print. Nothing can keep me away from my magazines.

What do you love about Viyet?
I have long admired Viyet and have loved watching the company grow through my sister who started out with them close to the beginning. Love that you can make an offer on products, and they offer antique and vintage as well as showroom samples. Viyet has become a valuable resource in helping clients sell high-end items that we can’t find a place for.
