Helen Davis of Helen Davis Interior Design focuses on finding one-of-a-kind pieces to mix with modern and traditional elements to create fresh yet timeless spaces. Her favorite part about being a designer is helping people feel confident and beautiful, and bringing out their personality and personal style in their homes.
What inspired this career path for you?
To be honest, I kind of fell into this career — I come from a fashion background originally, but when I left New York, I realized that that particular career path wasn’t available to me in my new city, Atlanta. I began sourcing and collecting vintage items for myself, and for others. From there, friends and family started asking me to help them with their homes, and a new career was born! I’ve found that my fashion background has helped me immensely in the interior design world. Ultimately, the job is to help people feel confident and beautiful, and to bring out their personality and personal style in their homes.
What is your go-to source for inspiration?
At the moment… Instagram! There are obviously a million things that inspire me — travel, museums, fashion, etc., but, Instagram gives me access to those things all at once!
Tell us about your creative process.
Typically it starts with one fabric, one color, one wallpaper, or a piece of art. Something that the client can’t live without, that becomes the foundation of the space. From there, we build upon that idea and the space begins to come to life!
Describe your style in 6 words or less.
Collected, upbeat, modern, colorful, unexpected, vibrant.
What’s a staple in your tool kit?
Measuring tape. I carry one with me at ALL times. I have one in every handbag I own!
Who do you look up to in the design world?
Iris Apfel. I couldn’t love her any more! Her sense of style, confidence, and ability to take risks inspires me constantly.
Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.
“I don’t have any rules because I would only be breaking them” — Iris Apfel. This quote resonates with me, because I try to teach my clients to stay away from the idea that you “should do” or “shouldn’t do” — those thoughts can paralyze you. Instead, I encourage them to do things that make them happy, regardless what others may think!
Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?
Does Instagram count?? Not only has Instagram helped me build my business, it also is a source of endless inspiration from other designers and creatives in the palm of my hand!
What do you love about Viyet?
I love the well-edited, curated collection of one-of-a-kind pieces! For my clients, my goal is for their homes to feel personal and collected, not “decorated”. Viyet helps me find those special pieces that I know my clients will continue to love for years to come.
