The days are getting shorter and schedules are getting a little fuller. But if there’s one thing that gets us excited for the coming weeks, it’s design. From vacations to book at daydream-worthy hotels to a few treats for ourselves, here’s a rundown of the things that got us talking:
A Winter Escape
Perched high on a sunny plateau and overlooking pristine hillside forests, the MiraMonti (above, and at top) is a boutique hotel that’s the perfect place to get away from holiday stresses. The exterior is a modern update of a traditional Alpine retreat, with luxurious amenities to spare.
Fab Faux Fur
The classic texture is just right for chilly nights. This faux fur pillow by Sabira Collection recreates the luxe material with an on-trend golden hue.
Lemonade Coloring Book
2016 continues to be the Year of Beyonce, but quite honestly, what year isn’t? This fabulous coloring book is inspired by Queen Bey’s ground-breaking album and makes a fun gift (for yourself).
An age-old artform meets a new point of view in the must-see exhibition “Porcelain, No Simple Matter: Arlene Shechet and the Arnhold Collection” at The Frick Collection in New York. The works, which were chosen by artist Arlene Shechet, primarily date back to the 18th century but also include select modern pieces by Schechet.
Another enduring trend of 2016 was metallics — and it’s a look that’s not going away any time soon. One of our favorite pieces right now on Viyet is Kravet’s Large Orbis Sphere, a 10″ sculpture made of aluminum finished in antique brass. Display it alone on a pedestal or use it in a grouping with other fabulous pieces of art.
Though it’s hard to believe that there was a time when streamlined modern architecture wasn’t in vogue, Jean Prouvé stunned the world with his “constructional philosophy” that centered on functionality and rational design. You can see models of some of his most famed ideas and creations at Galerie Patrick Seguin London until January 21.
One Fine Tray
A good tray can be hard to find, let alone a set of two. The Forest Collection Silver Trays by Glen Cove have a simple shape that lets the unique material — a metallic cowhide — shine (literally). We loved this modern interpretation of a silver tray.
Whether it’s a crystal accent or a slice of agate, organic accents bring a truly one-of-a-kind quality to a space. We love Kravet’s Large Zia Amethyst votive, which reveals gorgeous purple hues as it glimmers in candlelight.
No matter how advanced smart phones become, a good speaker is a must for enjoying Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music, Tidal, any other streaming service that comes along in the meantime, and, okay, even podcasts. The nostalgic design of the Marshall Kilburn Speaker is fun enough to display on its own.
