Understated glamour, the combination of a variety of periods and styles and the creation of comfortable spaces are the foundation of Jan Showers’ style. Jan is inspired by art, travel, fashion, fine antiques and objects, as well as nature.
What inspired this career path for you? I would say that my mother was my biggest influence – she had an incredible eye and knew how to put a room/house together. She believed in buying the best you can buy. She also had fabulous personal style and taught me about fine apparel – how clothing should be made, bound buttonholes, patterns and stripes seamed properly, and on and on. She knew how to do everything the right way. I had so much fun visiting with Martha Stewart, recently, and I told her that my mother was “Martha Stewart” before Martha became “Martha Stewart”.
What is your go-to source for inspiration? I find inspiration through my travels, art, antiques, fashion, and especially nature.
Tell us about your creative process. It really depends on what I am working on and where I am. When I am at my country home, I am really able to clear my mind and come up with so many ideas on a variety of things.
Describe your design style in 6 words or less. Classic, comfortable, understated glamour, timeless, refined.
What’s a staple in your tool kit? My JSA team – we have such a great team and all work well together.
Who do you look up to in the design world? Billy Baldwin, Albert Hadley, Dorothy Draper, Sister Parish, Frances Elkins, David Hicks, Mark Hampton, and Daniel Romualdez.
If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be? I love designing bedrooms – I am dying to cover the wall of a master bedroom in de Gournay or Gracie hand-painted wallpaper.
Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote. Choosing designs that ultimately mix with different interiors, from traditional to modern, is my real Inspiration.
Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without? Any good shelter magazine – I love reading through them each month. Although I have this great app on my iPad (great when I’m traveling) to read magazines, I enjoy reading the hard copy so much better.
What do you love about Viyet? I love the concept of offering high-quality products at a great price point. It is so beneficial for manufacturers to sell their inventory this way. Since we have eight showrooms across the country, we are always refreshing the displays and we have to store the remaining inventory in our warehouse. Now we have a great way to keep inventory moving! Also, customers who don’t have a designer now have a way to purchase pieces that are normally to the trade only.
