Formed in 1991, Lichten Craig is an award-winning architecture and interior design firm with offices in New York and Chicago. With wide and varied experience, we have completed both private and public commissions worldwide. Our work has been featured in the New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, Traditional Home and numerous books and blogs.

What inspired this career path for you? Spending almost every Sunday, from the ages of 7-14, house-hunting with my family — and spending the rest of the week analyzing the houses we saw the previous weekend! This experience led me to architecture school and a lifelong curiosity about what makes the right house for the right place and person.

What is your go-to source for inspiration? Travel — and defining a sense of place.

Tell us about your creative process. Before starting to draw — and dream — we spend a lot of time getting to know our clients — what makes their hearts beat faster, how they’d like to live, what’s getting in their way.  I usually work closely with the clients to set the design direction, and our team of architects and interior designers work collaboratively to bring the ideas to life.

Describe your style in 6 words or less. Classic but inventive, chic, and thoughtful

What’s a staple in your tool kit? A few key tools — a sketch pad, a black Flair, a tape, and an iPhone.

If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be? Nothing I like more than designing a home for a repeat client — we’ve established a language and a comfort level that make the process easy and positive.

Tell us your favorite design related word, phrase, or quote. There are so many that I love! Henry Ford on design, “If I’d asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” I’m a great believer in the power of education, so I love this quote by Picasso: “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” “Curiosity about life in all its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people.” —Leo Burnett

Which design blog, website, TV show, or magazine would you be lost without?  I usually start my day with Habitually Chic, and then it’s a parade of blogs, sites, and magazines throughout the day.

What do you love about Viyet? Nothing like a treasure hunt arriving at my desk every day!
