Viyet: What inspired this career path for you? Â
Kati: You could say that design is in my blood. My dad is a general contractor and my uncle is an architect, so I grew up on construction sites. My dad designed and built our home with his own two hands. I was there with him working on floor plans, picking out materials, etc. so it was ingrained in me at an early age! I saw the transformation – and gained a real understanding of the meaning of design and what an impact it can make, when it made such an impact on my own life so early on.Â
Viyet: Tell us about your creative process. Â Â
Kati: I’m usually inspired by our clients’ travels along with the architecture of the home. Proportion and function are really important to me – it has to be useful and appropriate for the space – but also must be beautiful and have meaning!
My style in six words or less “Classic with a global influence.”
Viyet: Who do you look up to in the design world? Â
Kati: There are a number of designers and styles both historically and currently I draw inspiration from. I have so many peers in the design world who I admire, and while I take cues from their work, my work is distinctly my own and is a combination of many influences.
Viyet: If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be? Â
Kati:Â I would design a retreat in the Hollywood hills for a world traveler. We recently opened a Los Angeles office and are expanding further into California!
Viyet: Tell us your favorite design related word, phrase, or quote. Â
Kati: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.†– William Morris
Viyet: Share a little bit about the pieces you’re consigning on Viyet, e.g., do any have unique backstories, in what kind of space do you hope they end up, etc.? Â
Kati:Â I have consigned many items in Viyet and I hope they end up with someone who loves them as much as I do! Everything we select for a project has meaning, purpose and beauty. Some of our custom pieces are super-special to me as they are specific to a certain space, but at the same time could work anywhere.
Viyet: What do you love about Viyet? Â
Kati:Â That I can find unique pieces for my clients that I know are quality made. I also know that when our clients relocate, we can find good homes for the well-loved items they may not have use for in their new homes. Spaces are much more interesting when unique and previously-loved items are used, rather than cookie-cutter starting from scratch each time. Â Viyet allows us to do that on both sides of the project spectrum!
