The interiors by California-based designer Amy Meier defy easy categorization. That’s because Meier has an uncanny ability to translate her clients’ personal style through the lens of modern elegance. But “modern” isn’t synonymous with “cold minimalism” — Meier’s designs have a distinctively warm, inviting quality. We caught up with Meier to learn more about what guides her unique sense of design. Read on to find out how she got her start in the business, her inspirations, and more.

Viyet: What inspired this career path for you?

Meier: It really is the culmination of different creative interests and endeavors. I studied photography as an undergraduate and earned my Masters in fashion design. This education, as well as the practical skills I gained while working professionally in both artistic fields have been invaluable in creating both my design aesthetic and my design business. But it was my parents’ influence and their encouragement to take my life into my own hands that really led me to find my own path. They always said, “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me”.

Viyet: Tell us about your creative process.

Meier: I am very inspired by photographs; and I begin each project by digitally creating a visual storyboard. It illustrates for me and the client our direction, where we are going in terms of look and feel, the colors, textures, and shapes, different pieces of furniture, and so on. Throughout the project, the design story continues to develop, but the initial storyboard is my anchor that keeps me rooted and focused.

My style in six words or less: Edited. Traditional. Surprising. Sculptural. Bespoke.

Viyet: If you could design a space for anyone, what kind of space and for whom would it be?

Meier: I am really wanting to design a modern solarium built off of an historic house. I love the juxtaposition of clean and adorned, of straight lines and curves. The ideal client could be anyone who loves design and embraces the journey we would be on together. It is all about fit.

Viyet: Tell us your favorite design-related word, phrase, or quote.

Meier: Similar to what Claude Debussy said, that “Music is the space between the notes,” I very much feel that, in design, the magic happens between the furniture.
