New York-based designer Drew McGukin expertly walks the line between sophisticated and approachable in his unforgettable interiors. It’s not surprising that his recently consigned collection of custom and vintage pieces have that same refined-yet-unfussy feel. We asked Drew for the backstory behind his favorite pieces. Here’s what he had to say:
“I love the scale of these chairs – big in the right way, yet subtle enough as well,” he says. “The burnt-orange leather will continue to wear and patina stunningly. They lean a little Asian, a little contemporary, but also have a timeless sensibility to them. They mix and match with different styles of tables very easily as well.”
“These back-painted mirrors are so dreamlike for me. The sheer size of it creates an impact alone, then you consider the imagery. I have several of them and never grow tired of the shadows, hints of color, depth, thoughtfulness.”
“We designed this console as a catch-all. It goes anywhere! We use it in so many different ways. I love the height of it and its slim profile. Hallway. TV stand. Side of a room. So many uses. The piece has a wonderful balance and contrast.”
“This little cart is screaming to be a bar. Add a mirrored inset in the top tray and the right set of bar accessories, and you’re off and running.”
“In another life, I used these to create very cool centerpieces for long wonderful dinner parties. The height of them allows you to get the floral up and out of everyone’s eyesight, so you can enjoy the guests seated across from you at the table.”
“This rusty-red cut velvet on a linen ground has just the right tension to pull off ‘Sexy-Casual’– such a great statement in a room that needs a lift!”
