Warmth meets elegance and a comfortable sophistication in the work of Boston-based Gary McBournie, whose refined and polished interiors are always a hit with design lovers. Classic furniture, decorative arts, innovative color schemes, and graphic accents are the signatures of his always-inviting style. Gary shares some of his techniques and sources of inspiration he uses to create iconic interiors, and also provides insightful design tips that will improve the aesthetic and functional capacity of any room.
Gary’s design inspiration greatly amplified after traveling to Europe while working for his first boss, Richard Fitzgerald. He recalls on the experience, “I love to visit historic houses and gardens, museums and regularly tour cities to view the architecture.†European motifs can be noticed throughout his work.
Attaining a comprehensive knowledge of a space Gary prepares to design is paramount to his creative process. He notes, “I spend a lot of time in my head before I begin a project. Consideration is given to the style of the home, the clients’ lifestyle as well as their wants and existing possessions. I also want my projects to live harmoniously with the surrounding environment, so when I first visit a new job, I spend a considerable amount of time walking the grounds and absorbing the light, colors, and textures.â€

“Orange is my favorite neutral.â€
Gary comments on Viyet: “For years, many of my clients have put their old/unused items into storage with monthly/yearly fees ultimately exceeding the cost of the goods. I can now provide a credible online resource for them to sell these items, and have already recommended Viyet to a long-term client. Viyet definitely fills a real need in the marketplace.â€
Beginning from an early age, Gary’s visual outlook on life was manifested through his keen interest and talent with graphical design, eventually leading to his life’s passion of interior design. After studying at the New England School of Art in Boston, Gary traveled to various places in Europe while working for the interior designer Richard Fitzgerald. In 1992, Gary founded his own firm, Gary McBournie Inc., and has thrived at helping his clients design their desired spaces.
